crafty fun with salt dough

I've been having lots of fun with my niece over the last few days. Yesterday we made a big bowlful of salt dough and spent a few hours using it all up. We created wall hangings, mobiles and ornaments with the sun streaming through the window and the radio playing in the background. It was a lovely morning.
The recipe we used was:
2 mugs of flour
1 mug of salt
approx 12 fl oz lukewarm water
You mix the ingredients together adding just enough of the water to make a supple but not too sticky dough. Then you knead the mixture for 10 minutes.
To stick bits together we made a 'slip' with a bit of dough and some water.
We used skewers to make holes through which wire could be passed. We also used bits of wire with the ends curled into little loops and pushed into the dough to make hangers, and pieces of scrunched up tinfoil as armatures.
Then the whole lot goes into the oven at 150 degrees c for a few hours until it makes a ringing sound like pottery when tapped. When it's cool you can paint it (preferably with acrylic paint) and with a couple of coats of varnish it can last for many, many years.
**Edit** Nà , You can find a couple of photos of salt dough christmas decos I made here and here and here.

What beautiful salt-dough creations, and what a lovely way to spend time with a smaller family member :)
I have a long-standing relationship with salt-dough. As a child it all ended up in my mouth... My poor mother, having to put up with me!
What a great craft project to do with kids. And your creations are especially sweet.
wow, they are soooo gorgeous!!! i especially love the branch and the falling leaves, and the bird, oh and the bun, ...hmm, crikey, they're all really lovely! as i saw the first few photos i thought "must ask for the instructions!" then i scrolled down and they were there!! yay!! thank you!!! you are a star - i was wondering what the heck to make for friends for christmas this year and now i think you might have solved the dilemna! last year was the lino christmas card, the year before we made little chickpea/walnut shell baby jesus to hang on trees, this year we hadn't yet figured out and was thinking i'd maybe have to rapidly progress from straight lines on the sewing machine in order to do little fabric decorations - now maybe i shall try both. we have a drawer full of dough cutters in various shapes - have you ever tried making your own?? ooh, i can't wait to play! i'm rambling! it's the dough-excitement!!!
have a good weekend won't you!
Hi tash - i was wickedly thinking of making salt dough biscuits to give to trick or treaters but eggs hitting the windows isn't very appealing! ;-) Don't know how you managed to eat it!!
Hi Susan - thank you, you're very sweet.
Hi Na - so pleased you like them! i've never tried making my own cutters. it sounds exciting! the possibilities!! where do you get the metal from? i have a few cutters but mostly use a knife to cut things out. I did some salt dough decorations a few years ago which turned out quite well. i will post them up again for you. :-) have a great weekend!!
thanks a lot, i repeat, you're a star! actually, you misunderstood me i'm afraid - when i said about making your own cutters i was asking if you've ever tried - i DO have a drawer full, but unfortunately not home-made ones! i was daydreaming of how it would be fun to try doing them, but don't quite know how! tomorrow evening mr m. is out as he has a presentation, so i might just have to make me some dough!!! your christmas decorations are fab by the way, oh, and we've just got back from picking persimon (delayed by a week due to the rain, but they're still hard) ...i shall be going to the post office tomorrow, all being well :)
Creative hands are beautiful.
Wonderful! Sounds very festive I must say, will you hang your decorations on the tree? Think the old Christmas feeling is starting to happen now what with the colder weather an' all, but still have to get shopping!!!
Na - I will see if i can find anything on the net about making cutters. I'm curious now. Really looking forward to the parcel. :-D
Andrew - They are, aren't they. Not mine, I hasten to add!
Gromit - The snowmen always go on the tree. They've been going for about 3 years now. Salt dough keeps well when it's varnished. I can say that I've officially started my crimble shopping which is a good feeling!
Oh fantastic! Thanks for the recipe, will definitely try this.
Thanks for posting your recipe - I'd love to have a go with my girls for Christmas decorations. :O)
